Keep Your Kids Safe in 2012!

The last months of 2011 were laden with news stories filled with sordid details of young boys allegedly victimized by a once celebrated sports figure. And while the prominence of the alleged sexual predator in this high-profile case has brought the issue of child sexual abuse to the forefront of most everyone's mind, crimes like these occur every day.

How do we recognize someone who might hurt our children? Often times they are the nicest, most attractive, gregarious individuals who charm the children and parents. We call it "grooming" - taking a special interest in your child or giving preferential treatment. Parents can learn to protect their children and how to recognize the signs.

Tips to help keep children safe:
  1. Take an active role in children's lives, their activities, and the adults involved.
  2. Talk to children regularly about what they are doing to help you stay alert for problems.
  3. Teach children important skills to help them protect themselves. Make sure they know they can talk to you about anything that's bothering them or if they feel mixed-up or confused. (Especially about touching issues)

What parents can do if it happens:

  1. Believe the child--children don't usually make up stories of sexual abuse.
  2. Be careful with questions--try to find out as much as you can about what happened, but avoid "leading" questions.
  3. Get help for the child
  4. Report it!
