Our Organization

The Child Abuse Prevention Association is committed to providing a variety of prevention and treatment services to the children and their families throughout our community. We work to help these families heal from the traumatic effects of child abuse; including emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. We provide counseling services and resources to families to help aid them in creating strong and healthy home environments.

CAPA also provides educational training for both children and adults, designed to help both increase awareness of abuse, as well as highlight ways in which such abuse can be prevented. Children learn different safety skills and tactics that they can use in a situation of abuse, and parents are taught different positive parenting techniques to implement within the home. Individual therapy, family therapy, crisis assistance, support groups, and a variety of other services are available through CAPA. (For a comprehensive list of all the services provided by CAPA, please follow the Programs and Services link.)

Our Vision

We believe children should be valued and nurtured by both their families and the larger family of humankind.

1. Every child and family will begin receiving services without delay.

2. New parents will have the opportunity to develop a strong network of support and create an environment for their children that is both safe and nurturing.

3. Every member of our community will know how they can help prevent child abuse.

Nationally, there are over 2 million reports of abuse/neglect made each year. As a result, 1,500 of these children die from their injuries. Oftentimes, the very people who these children rely on for protection and comfort are the same people who subject them to abuse or neglect. Children in every community face these same risks, and in Missouri, there are over 60,000 children who enter into the child protection system each year. Approximately 10,000 of those children are confirmed as having been abused or neglected.

Where child abuse has been confirmed, 45% of these children were neglected, 24% were victims of sexual abuse, and 25% were physically abused. Missouri has one of the highest child abuse mortality rates in the nation. The Department of Social Services data indicates that 46 children died in Missouri in one year, 11 of those deaths were in Jackson County.
